To help, we have tried to answer some of the most common questions people ask before buying a best fan in India. Let’s take a look Questions About Buying a Ceiling Fan.

1. What is the Right Fan Size?

This is one of the most common questions people ask when buying a ceiling fan. However, there’s no one size fits all type of answer to this question . The size of fan (blade sweep size) depends on your room size. Now let us first understand what’s a blade sweep size.

Blade sweep is the diameter of the circular area the fan covers when the blades are in motion. Here are some of the common sweep sizes available in the market.

  • 600mm (approx. 24 inches)
  • 900mm (approx. 36 inches)
  • 1050mm (approx. 42 inches)
  • 1200mm (approx. 48 inches)
  • 1300mm (approx. 52 inches)
  • 1400mm (approx. 56 inches)

Note – A fan with a blade sweep size of 1200mm is considered a standard size fan.

Recommended Fan Sizes for Different Room Sizes

Room Size (in sq.ft.) Example Recommended Fan Size (inches)
Less than 50 Small Bathrooms, Utility Rooms, Walk In 24 to 36
50 – 75 Bathrooms, Kitchens, Study Rooms, Single Bedrooms 42 to 48
75-175 Bedrooms, Dining Rooms, Living Rooms 48
175-300 Halls and other bigger rooms 48 (2 fans)

2. What is the Right DownRod Size?

The downrod size of your fan is an important point to consider when buying a ceiling fan. That’s because the right downrod size of the fan will help you ensure that there’s enough gap between the fan blades and the flooring, which in turn will help you ensure the safety of the people in the room where the fan needs to be installed. The length of the downrod is also important for ensuring optimum air dispersal.

The height of the downrod depends on the height of the ceiling.  The minimum gap between the fan blades and the flooring should be around 7 feet. For an optimum air dispersal the distance should be around 7.5 feet.

Ceiling sizes and downrod sizes

  • If the height of the ceiling is standard 9.5 feet to 10 feet, a standard size downrod can be used.
  • If it’s a high ceiling room, the distance between the blades and flooring can be around 8.5 feet. You need to use a downrod of a bigger size.
  • If the height of the ceiling is less or there’s a false ceiling in the room, you would need a small downrod.

Note – For proper airflow the minimum distance between the blades and the ceiling should be around 9 to 10 inches.

3. What is CMM? Or How much air does the fan deliver?

CMM is a unit of airflow delivery. The full form of CMM is cubic meters per minute.  The CMM of a fan tells you what volume of air a fan delivers or moves every minute. Higher the airflow, more air it will deliver and higher the cooling capacity of your fan.

Airflow, however, depends on other factors such as the motor and the blades of the fan. Remember – An airflow anywhere between 200-230 CMM is considered a good airflow.

4. How much power does a fan consume?

It’s a no brainer that one would want to go with an energy efficient fan that consumes less energy and gives a better output. The power consumed by a fan is measured in Watts. You can check this information in the specifications section of a fan catalogue.

If you are looking for a fan with a lower power consumption but higher output, the latest Luminous fans with BLDC technology are highly recommended.

5. What Is the warranty available on the fan?

Before you buy a ceiling fan online or from a local store, make sure you ask about the manufacturer’s warranty. This will help you ensure that you receive proper after-sales service and that the performance of your fan is not compromised. Usually, ceiling fans come with a 1-year to 2-year warranty.

The brand of fan you buy is an important consideration when looking for a ceiling fan online. We recommend that you buy from a reputable brand like Luminous that has been at the forefront of designing and manufacturing some of the best fans in India.
