Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler
There is no denying that gambling is an incredibly popular hobby. In fact, it is so popular that online gambling has already become a multi-billion-dollar industry, in only two decades or so. Gambling is also popular enough to inspire many creatives to write stories around it. Such is the case with Homura Kawamoto, whose hit manga series Kakegurui got a Netflix anime adaptation.
Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler tells the story of Yumeko Jabami, who transfers to a prestigious private school. However, Hyakkaou Academy is different from most high-schools. It isn’t athletic abilities, social skills, or academic performance that matters in this school. Rather, it is gambling. The school is ruled by a school council who rule with an iron fist and incredible gambling skills. When Jabami moves to the school, they expect that they can break her easily. However, they soon learn that this seemingly innocent girl is a master gambler, whose compulsion makes her a real threat to their rule.
Kakegurui is exciting, fun, and guaranteed to keep any fan on the edge of their seat. The anime’s success has earned it multiple seasons on Netflix, all of which have received a positive reception. Certainly worth checking out for anyone who is looking for an engaging thriller.
The Way of the Househusband
But what if you just want a comfy show that you can sit back, relax, and enjoy? Look no further than the Way of the Househusband. Tatsu was once an incredibly deadly Yakuza enforcer called “The Immortal Dragon.” That is until he fell in love, abandoned his old life, and became a househusband.
While his wife works, Tatsu spends his days cleaning, cooking, shopping, and taking care of the home. The light-hearted, yet surprisingly clever comedy show juxtaposes Tatsu’s bland, relatively boring, and yet ultimately happy life, with his dour, intense, Yakuza-like personality.
Each episode is shorter than 20 minutes, including the opening and ending credits. A truly fantastic experience for anyone looking to relax while binging a comedy show. Give it a watch if you have some time to spare on a weekend.
Devilman: Crybaby
From light-hearted comedy to incredibly dour and tragic fantasy. Devilman Crybaby is based on the classic manga Devilman, written and illustrated by the father of horror manga, Go Nagai. The tale focuses on Akira Fudo, whose body becomes the vessel for a Demonic Duke, called Amon. Together with his childhood friend Ryou, they combat the forces of hell in a desperate attempt to stop the apocalypse.
Beautifully animated, incredibly poignant, and deliciously tragic, Devilman Crybaby is perfect for anyone looking for a dark fantasy anime that strays from the path that most fantasy action anime take. While the main character may seem like a generic “good guy” protagonist at first, the story reveals so much more about his character as it unveils. Best of all, at only 10 episodes, the anime is quite short. You can finish it off in a weekend.
