Charlie Chaplin

The first real star of the big screen was Charlie Chaplin. He was known for being a comic genius, bringing characters alive without the benefit of sound. His physical characteristics included his small mustache, cane and bowler hat, which he never seemed to be without. He was the most famous actor in his day. Did you know that he never became an American citizen? He retained his British citizenship even though he resided in the U.S. for 40 years. He was accused of siding with communist views, and the government revoked his visa while he was on vacation in Britain in 1952. He remained in Europe, only returning the U.S. 20 years later to accept an Oscar.

Clarke Gable

His work in “Gone With the Wind” was his most beloved even though Clarke Gable had starred in plenty of other projects before. It was the role of Rhett Butler, and his “I don’t give a damn” attitude that launched him into superstardom. While he began his career during the silent film era, he made the transition to speaking roles seamlessly. Among the interesting facts about Clark Gable is this tidbit: His birth certificate erroneously stated he was female. The irony of the ladies’ man being categorized as female at birth is pretty epic. He tragically died of a heart attack at the age of 60. In 2019, his grandson, Clarke James Gable III also died of a heart attack at the age of 30. It was later revealed that the third-generation actor died as the result of an accidental opioid overdose.

James Dean

James Dean played characters who rebelled against the socially accepted norm. His dashing looks only increased his sex appeal across the female population. However, this young and talented actor’s life was cut short when he died in a car accident. Dean only made three movies during his short career, but his influence is still felt today.
