Downtown Sudbury Ribfest comes to town

Labor day weekend marks the arrival of RibFest in Downtown Sudbury. It is held between 11 am and 10 pm on Saturday. On Sunday, you can catch it between the hours of 11 am and 6 pm.

Six of the best rib teams in town will take on each other for some big awards. Best Chicken, Best Sauce and Best Ribs awards are all up for grabs. There’s also the People’s Choice Awards on Minto Street where the ribs contest is also happening. You can enjoy awesome live music from Friday to Sunday. Stalls for merchandise, craft and music will be set up. There will be a family area in the parking lot of the Sudbury area. Right opposite the street, you can even visit the Farmer’s Market.

The Park celebrates Labor Day

The Ontario Progressive Conservative government will be celebrating Labor Day in the Park. This event is scheduled from 10 am to 4 pm at Bell Park. The agenda at hand includes bringing back the sex-ed school curriculum and ending the basic income pilot program. The event will be of no cost to attendees. Visitors can enjoy the Paris Street march as well as hear union representatives speak. The event is for families and children can enjoy fun activities including face painting, games, music, bouncy castles, and even a dunk tank. Food stalls and information desks will be set up as well.

Other news briefs

Other news includes court proceedings regarding the charges brought against City of Greater Sudbury with regards to the death of Cecile Paquette. The City has been cleared of charges by Judge Karen Lische. In other news, a member of the city council is calling for modifications to approvals on building projects citing the example of the past site where the St. Joseph’s Health Center was located on Bell Park.

With the new school year about to start, there are post-secondary students that may need to worry about labor unrest within professors. There could be strikes as seen before in fall 2017 when college professors were on strike for a good month and a week.

Austrian lithium development firm Lepidic is looking at industrial properties situated in Sudbury to make a chemical plant for the production of lithium carbonate. These two properties will make the carbonate used in making lithium-ion batteries.

The mayor’s race is heating up. One candidate, Bill Crumplin, wants the arena to stay in downtown. He also wants the economy to be more tech-based. This way Greater Sudbury can be more ready for the 21st-century economy.

The Ward 6 candidate Chris Bentley, running for city council, feels that building budgets can be managed more efficiently. These changes should be from bottom to top according to Bentley.

RibFest is happening but we may see rain. According to weather reports, Labor Day weekend is expected to see showers and that could impact RibFest. Chances of showers are reportedly 50 percent.
