An unfortunate indicator of Chinese views on Americans

A satirical article written by comedian and New Yorker contributor Andy Borowitz was translated by Chinese state run Xinhua news agency, which missed the facetious undertones.

The article, entitled ‘Amazon Founder Says He Clicked on Washington Post by Mistake’ was intended to poke fun of the sometimes frustrating process of online shopping. Borowitz jokes that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos accidentally added the Washington Post to his online ‘cart’ and then received an unexpected 250 million dollar charge on his American Express, which he then had trouble disputing.

Xinhua translated and ran the article and shortly thereafter The People’s Daily Online also picked it up. This misunderstanding has drawn even more derision to the already often ridiculed news agencies.
For The People’s Daily this is, sadly, not the first time such a thing has happened. In 2012 satirical newspaper The Onion named North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un their sexiest man alive, the People’s Daily responded by not only reporting the story but also added a 55 page slideshow meant to highlight Jong-Un’s machismo and overwhelming sexual presence.

Xinhua has also seen more than its fair share of gaffes. Earlier in the week the same news agency posted a slideshow on their website meant to expose the horrors or American execution without realizing the images were from an admittedly bizarre fetish porno.

Plan Revealed to Pay Abusive Priests to Leave

The Roman Catholic Church received another black eye this week when it was revealed that the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, was in charge of orchestrating a plan to pay priests embroiled in sexual scandal to leave the church when he was Archbishop of Milwaukee.

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee faced so many lawsuits regarding children who were allegedly sexually molested by priests in the Diocese that it filed for bankruptcy.

The plan to pay priests to leave in order to quiet the scandal was revealed last week as part of a federal settlement between the Diocese and individuals seeking redress for sexual abuse committed by numerous church officials.

Not only do the documents indicate that Dolan was involved in the plan to pay off priests to gain their silence, but they also indicate that he was in charge of a Vatican-approved plan to shift more than $50 million in church funds into a trust account in order to protect the church’s assets from being seized during bankruptcy proceedings.

Although many critics say that the Diocese also transferred priests to other locations rather than reporting them to the police when sexual misconduct was uncovered, Dolan did not seem to be part of that transfer plan.

Bullying Leads to Child’s Arrest

A Stamford, Connecticut female was recently arrested for disorderly conduct. This might not sound very newsworthy, but the bizarre part is that the female in question is a 12 year old girl- a relative child. However, the girl has been bullying a a fellow student to a point that had escalated beyond the school’s control.

The victim in question has told her parent’s that she wanted to kill herself as a result of the constant taunting. School officials were immediately told, but the bullying only increased. It is then that the police were asked to step in to help.

The police decided to arrest the child only to release her to her parents later that same day. This might seem like an extreme action, but bullying has gotten out of hand. Several teens have made national headlines over suicides stemmed from intense bullying. Hopefully, the arrested girl will learn from this experience. The scare tactic might be the only way to really drive the lesson into her.

Neither the girls or the school have been identified as to protect them from further scrutiny. The Stamford police stand by their decision as bullying will not be tolerated in their district.

US Senator Warns Against Increase in Airfare

US Airways Group announced that they were going to increase the airfare for flights from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The increase is the fare is set to begin in early January.

At that time, US Airways will be the only airline offering flights between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. This will increase the price of the fare by $580 which includes tax.

Senator Bob Casey, a Democrat from Philadelphia, asked US Airways not to increase the fare for flights between these two cities because of the weak economy. He warned the airline that the increase in the fare would greatly hurt people who frequently use that route for business purposes.

Todd Lehmacher who is a spokesman for US Airways said that the price increase will likely stay in place. Lehmacher also said he was willing to talk with the senator about the increase in the fare.

At this time, there is no word on when talks will take place.

Bionic Man ‘Lives’ With Synthetic Parts

A team of engineers has assembled and completed what is being referred to as a “bionic man.” He is composed of a number of artificial organs that simulate a human body’s natural processes including blood circulation. He is able to walk and to breathe. He is said to have between sixty and seventy percent of the functions of a human.

He requires a walking machine to walk and sit down. It is the same type of machine used by people who have spinal injuries. His artificial blood also carried oxygen just like real blood. The parts are incredibly advanced, but not yet ready to be used in humans. He current lacks a few other parts

The Smithsonian Channel will be featuring a special documentary about him on October 20, which is titled “The Incredible Bionic Man.” The program will show how he was built. The parts that compose the synthetic man came from seventeen different manufactures around the world. Shadow Robot Co. oversaw the cutting edge project.

He will be coming to the United States for the first time this week at New York’s Comic Con. The bionic man will be appearing alongside Bertolt Meyer. Meyer is a 36-year-old social psychologist at the University of Zurich.

Philadelphia Woman Dragged Onto Subway Tracks

According to ABC news a woman in Philadelphia was viciously attacked by a unidentified man. It was recorded by a security camera that the man choked the woman in order to obtain her purse. She fought and he continued to assault her until he knocked her to the ground.

The man then dragged the poor battered woman across the concrete to the rails of the subway station. The man then ruthlessly threw the woman onto the rails and just left her there.

When the man was done attacking the woman he got her purse and stole the one thing he really wanted, which was her cell phone. He appeared to have no care in the world for what he had done.

The man was recorded walking away with the cell phone and leaving the woman on the rails. She was able to climb to the platform and suffered minor injuries.
